The high school fashion designer wannabes find a mentor to help them nail down what they want their brand to be about。 And just when I think they are laying the groundwork for some interesting storylines in the future, up pops "Final Chapter," and everything quickly wraps up quickly in a way that's okay but feels premature。Sure enough, it says "Final Volume" on the back cover。 I guess I should look at that sometimes before I start reading。As consolation, there's a really good bonus story tucked The high school fashion designer wannabes find a mentor to help them nail down what they want their brand to be about。 And just when I think they are laying the groundwork for some interesting storylines in the future, up pops "Final Chapter," and everything quickly wraps up quickly in a way that's okay but feels premature。Sure enough, it says "Final Volume" on the back cover。 I guess I should look at that sometimes before I start reading。As consolation, there's a really good bonus story tucked in the back that inspired the series。 It's powerful tale of finding and asserting one's gender identity, but it is also harrowing, filled with transphobia and other nastiness from a bunch of awful high school kids。 。。。more

A realistic finale to the series。 It felt a tad underwhelming as an ending, but overall it was an interesting series exploring very important topics。

Love the English cover of this one, btw。So。。。 Here we end the story, the Boys Run The Riot gang just started on the path towards the future。 I don't mind the story not following them all the way to the top, but thempacing still felt a bit off when Imlook at it as a whole。 Roy's personal journey feels the most balanced, thought and I appreciate that the focus remained on him。As for some other drawbacks, the dialogue was at times very stilted ,some English that felt wayyyy too structured like Japa Love the English cover of this one, btw。So。。。 Here we end the story, the Boys Run The Riot gang just started on the path towards the future。 I don't mind the story not following them all the way to the top, but thempacing still felt a bit off when Imlook at it as a whole。 Roy's personal journey feels the most balanced, thought and I appreciate that the focus remained on him。As for some other drawbacks, the dialogue was at times very stilted ,some English that felt wayyyy too structured like Japanese。 Few manga gave naturalistic dialogue, but here it often felt clunky。 Appreciated the terminology footnotes, though。The muchore roughly drawn debute short story was surprisingly strong, and I really appreciate them adding that。 Often, short extras feel like a waste of pages, but that raw story packed a punch and lifts this volume a whole star! 。。。more

I'm going to be honest, I'm sad that the series was so short but I'm satisfied with the endings for the characters, for the most part。 It was interesting to learn more about Jin and his relationship with his family, specifically his dad。 I also liked the coming out scene between Ryo and his family。 I don't think that his parents ended up showing up to the exhibition but I'm still glad he invited them。 The boys becoming apprentices to Joe, who has had a brand for over 2 4。5 stars。This is the end! 5 stars for the completion of the main story, but had to drop a star for the volume itself because oof the short story included at the end of the volume was hard to read。 I can see the beginnings of Boys Run the Riot in it, which was neat to see, but the art was especially rough。

Never read a manga before, but this series was my first and possibly my favorite。 We learn more about Jin and Ryo as individuals in their families during this novel。 And in a way, we learn their insecurities。 Boys Run The Riot isn't a good story because it has a trans protagonist, but because it allows the reader to really understand Ryo's emotions and the dysphoria he's going through。 Never read a manga before, but this series was my first and possibly my favorite。 We learn more about Jin and Ryo as individuals in their families during this novel。 And in a way, we learn their insecurities。 Boys Run The Riot isn't a good story because it has a trans protagonist, but because it allows the reader to really understand Ryo's emotions and the dysphoria he's going through。 。。。more

I loved reading this series。 It had so much sincerity and heart。 For all its groundbreaking barriers, so many characters felt very lived in with rich backstories。 The ending did feel a little rushed and tied in a perfect bow, but it did it in a satisfying and lovely way。 It was also fantastic reading the mangaka’s debut one-shot that inspired the series at the end。 I can’t wait to read more of their work in the future!

The one-shot (that preceded and formed the basis of the series) included in this volume is so raw。 I kind of wish Boys Run the Riot had been more like it。 Still, the manga is great。 Four volumes isn't enough to explore everything, but I liked it a lot。 The one-shot (that preceded and formed the basis of the series) included in this volume is so raw。 I kind of wish Boys Run the Riot had been more like it。 Still, the manga is great。 Four volumes isn't enough to explore everything, but I liked it a lot。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I love, love, love this series and would absolutely recommend it to anyone and everyone…。 But I have to say I’m quite disappointed and underwhelmed with how it ended。 The pacing of the four novels is brilliant and brings forth many important and relevant discussions about stigma, societal pressure to fit in, and prejudice against minority groups。 Also in the fourth volume we are introduced to Ryo and Jin’s parents and the constricting expectations they have for their children。 However, just as s I love, love, love this series and would absolutely recommend it to anyone and everyone…。 But I have to say I’m quite disappointed and underwhelmed with how it ended。 The pacing of the four novels is brilliant and brings forth many important and relevant discussions about stigma, societal pressure to fit in, and prejudice against minority groups。 Also in the fourth volume we are introduced to Ryo and Jin’s parents and the constricting expectations they have for their children。 However, just as soon as we learn about these important dynamics that are so instrumental to the character’s fears and motivations… the series ends。 There were so many exciting topics that this series aimed to discuss but then never developed。 And don’t get me wrong, I love a series that leaves room for interpretation and wonder, but I can’t help but feel like we were left hanging with a lot more questions than answers。 How does Ryo’s relationship with his parents develop after he comes out as trans? How does our main characters’ clothing brand unite the social minorities that they aim to empower (The introduction of the young single mom was very interesting and then they just did nothing with it)? Another avenue I think would’ve been important to explore: How does Chika’s allyship affect her relationship with her friends or parents? Overall, the series is wonderful。 The art is amazing, all of the characters are realistic and relatable, and the societal issues it presents are extremely interesting。 I just wish the characters had been more fleshed out and the issues more fully developed。 。。。more

SO。 MANY。 FEELINGS!!!!I feel like this conclusion to this story was perfect。 As much as I could have continued to read this series for a long time, it felt like this final volume was truly the natural conclusion。 We see our characters face their demons, and present their real selves to the world, and I couldn't be more proud of what they chose with their life。 I hope we get some more series translated from this mangaka! Here, we get more growth from the trio, as they learn what it takes to create and run a brand, and more of Jin's back story, which I didn't realise I needed so badly until I had it。It had a good ending, but I do feel it didn't stack up to the promise of the cover。 That implied there was some serious growth in their designing skills, but they're still kids and still finding their way, which is fine。 But an Epilogue or short of what happens maybe a year or five down the road would have been great。 Here, we get more growth from the trio, as they learn what it takes to create and run a brand, and more of Jin's back story, which I didn't realise I needed so badly until I had it。It had a good ending, but I do feel it didn't stack up to the promise of the cover。 That implied there was some serious growth in their designing skills, but they're still kids and still finding their way, which is fine。 But an Epilogue or short of what happens maybe a year or five down the road would have been great。 I LOVED Ryo's personal growth being expressed in the clothes again。There was a bonus story, of the original short that inspired this series。 It was much heavier, but also very brave and seemed to cover all the important issues at once。 。。。more

I absolutely adored this series。 Found family is always one of my favorite themes and seeing that here with a trans protagonist? Absolute perfection! I wish the story could have continued for a few more volumes, but regardless I still enjoyed the ending。

A really abrupt ending to a really good series。 There's so much going on in this book, and some plot threads aren't fully resolved。 This may be intentional。 Ryo comes out to his parents and has a single, fraught conversation with them。 Is this a dropped plot thread, or is it reflecting that this is going to be an ongoing process in their family? I lean more towards the latter。 I also appreciate that this series hasn't pretended that success in fashion is anything but hard work and luck, and some A really abrupt ending to a really good series。 There's so much going on in this book, and some plot threads aren't fully resolved。 This may be intentional。 Ryo comes out to his parents and has a single, fraught conversation with them。 Is this a dropped plot thread, or is it reflecting that this is going to be an ongoing process in their family? It's such a shame to see the series end here, but it's got a fantastic ending to compensate。 The boys are building their brand, and their first shot at an exhibition means they need to figure out what the hell their brand actually is。 All the themes of the series, all the rebellion and dissatisfaction with prejudice, come to the forefront as they decide where they're going next。 At the end of the day this isn't really a series about becoming the next top brand, it's about some young kids finding It's such a shame to see the series end here, but it's got a fantastic ending to compensate。 The boys are building their brand, and their first shot at an exhibition means they need to figure out what the hell their brand actually is。 All the themes of the series, all the rebellion and dissatisfaction with prejudice, come to the forefront as they decide where they're going next。 At the end of the day this isn't really a series about becoming the next top brand, it's about some young kids finding a way to express themselves and live the life they want to lead。 And that's what we get- some kids, having fun, enjoying each others' company, and putting their heart and soul into their passions。This volume also has a reprint of the Keito Gaku's one-shot Light, which also stars a trans man and centres around trying to live authentically and deal with transphobia, bullies, and holding down a part-time job。 It's a bit rough, with a sketchier style to the linework, and given the dozens of Boys Run the Riot chapters that would run with a similar theme for longer and with more complexity it almost pales in comparison, but it's solid。 It's a good self-contained one-shot that feels like a sort of prequel tacked in to fill out the volume。 。。。more

The boys are still having fun, but their sales have slowly dried up。 Faced with a chance given to them by a guy named Joe who’s lived off his brand for years, it all comes down to an exhibition that might finally kick things to the next level。 Or not。When you hit the final volume and you didn’t realize it was coming because so much was still up in the air, that’s usually a warning sign to me。 While the series closes out fairly strong, there’s no question that the juggling act suffers for crammin The boys are still having fun, but their sales have slowly dried up。 Faced with a chance given to them by a guy named Joe who’s lived off his brand for years, it all comes down to an exhibition that might finally kick things to the next level。 Or not。When you hit the final volume and you didn’t realize it was coming because so much was still up in the air, that’s usually a warning sign to me。 While the series closes out fairly strong, there’s no question that the juggling act suffers for cramming too much in。Were you interested in whether Ryo was going to have to explore the world of dating and, if so, with whom? Too bad。 Will the boys make it? Really not sure。 Where does the future leave our hero? Shrug。 What’s the deal with Jin’s mom? Don’t ask me。 The point here is the brand and the brand is the point, but there’s a lot left on the table that I wanted to see addressed。The intricacies of designing a clothing brand are explored in detail here and I feel like the story, like many others I’ve seen of late, gets bogged down in the joy of its philosophies and minutiae rather than the story proper。 Yes, they need to figure out what they want to say and when they do their individual soul-searching I’d important but it takes longer than it should。It gets its mojo back towards the end, but it doesn’t have the space for anything to breathe, so getting lectures on design while they don’t design squat is a really questionable decision。 Everything feels squeezed in uncomfortably and that’s without most things being resolved。When they do design it’s a welcome callback to the very first volume of this series, which was easily the best one and the subsequent books never quite managed to achieve its level。 What they design for the exhibition should be an absolute breath taker like Ryo’s first graffiti piece, but it’s very… just okay。I realize this is complaining a fair bit, but I wanted more from this series。 It has some great sections here - Ryo’s coming out to his parents is fraught (again, more of the fallout would have been really welcome - this narrative just vanishes), Jin’s portions start off a bit aimless but really codify into something worthwhile at the end。 It’s ultimately not quite enough for me。The book’s ending is pretty good - the crew continues, they find the right people, it doesn’t merely give them a carte blanche happy denouement that promises roses forever。 It’s tempered with reality while still emphasizing hope in a way that’s very good and important。Joe turns out to be a fairly boring character, though he comes through for the guys in a way that a returning character at the start of this volume does not。 The exhibition climax is kind of wobbly, however, and doesn’t form a cohesive whole the way I’d like。The last fifty pages or so are the one-shot that lead to this series and, boy, they don’t layer that thing with trigger warnings for nothing。 It is some of the most brutal bullying I’ve read lately and is very different in tone and content from the majority of the serialized version。 It definitely goes a little melodramatic with the ending as well。4 stars - I think this is a good series, I think it’s a very important series - trans mangaka are not exactly common and the perspective is super worthwhile and this is not bad and worth supporting。 I just wish it had gone on longer or tied up a little more with the ending。 In the end a good-trending-to-great story, but not exactly as amazing as I’d hoped。 。。。more
